IShowSpeed Sparks Controversy with Ghanaian Passport Choice

Popular streamer IShowSpeed has ignited a firestorm in Liberia after identifying Ghana as his country of origin, rather than Liberia, where he met relatives during his African tour. The controversy surrounds his recent acquisition of a Ghanaian passport, officially making him a citizen of Ghana. According to Joy News, a DNA test reportedly revealed Ghanaian ancestry, influencing his decision to choose Ghana over Liberia.
The drama unfolded after Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced IShowSpeed would receive a Ghanaian passport, citing “irrefutable ties” to the country. Wode Maya, a Ghanaian YouTuber involved in IShowSpeed’s tour, supported the decision, stating the streamer has genuine African roots and aims to change negative narratives about the continent.
Liberians are expressing disappointment, feeling IShowSpeed should have acknowledged his Liberian connections. Meanwhile, Ghanaians are divided, with some welcoming the move as a cultural gesture and others questioning its haste.
Wode Maya defended the decision, emphasizing IShowSpeed’s influence in promoting Africa globally. “He’s someone who’s on that journey to change the negative narrative of Africa,” Wode Maya said in an interview.
The incident highlights the complexities of identity and citizenship in Africa, where cultural ties often transcend national borders.
IShowSpeed’s Ghanaian passport marks a new chapter in his African journey, but the controversy underscores the need for sensitivity in navigating complex cultural landscapes.
