According to #Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the concluding phase of the exercise witnessed the arrival of forty one evacuees, elevating the cumulative tally of repatriated citizens to approximately one thousand nine hundred. The ministry disclosed that the operation was executed in close collaboration with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Pretoria, South African immigration authorities and international humanitarian partners.
A senior government official is quoted as describing the evacuation as a testament to Ghana’s unwavering commitment to the protection of its citizens abroad, emphasizing that no Ghanaian would be abandoned in the face of existential threat. He is further quoted as affirming that psychosocial support and reintegration assistance would be extended to returnees who suffered trauma, displacement and loss of livelihoods.
The recent wave of xenophobic attacks, which targeted foreign owned businesses and residential enclaves, reignited continental anxiety over recurring Afrophobia and strained diplomatic relations within the Southern African region. Ghana’s swift intervention mirrors similar evacuations undertaken by other West African states, underscoring the urgency of addressing deep rooted socio economic grievances that fuel hostility toward fellow Africans.
