Ghana Armed Forces Removes Alhaji Seidu Abagre from Bawku

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has removed Alhaji Seidu Abagre, the rival Mamprusi Chief, from Bawku, following recommendations from the Otumfuo Asantehene Osei Tutu II-led mediation report. This move is part of the government’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the conflict-prone area.

The removal was carried out on December 24, 2025, with Alhaji Seidu Abagre now in the custody of security officials, safe and sound. The Ministry of the Interior confirmed this action was taken in accordance with the mediation report submitted to President John Dramani Mahama by the Asantehene.

The Asantehene’s report explicitly stated that the Supreme Court ruling recognizing Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba must be strictly respected and enforced. He emphasized that no leader, regardless of status, is above the 1992 Constitution and laws duly enacted and affirmed by the courts.

The government has announced a GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund to support reconstruction, infrastructure development, and economic recovery in the area. This fund will be disbursed over three years, starting from 2026, and managed by a high-level committee chaired by the Finance Minister.

The removal of Alhaji Seidu Abagre marks a significant step towards restoring peace and stability in Bawku, a region plagued by intermittent violence and clashes between the Kusasi and Mamprugu communities. The government urges all stakeholders to support the peace-building process in the spirit of unity, restraint, and patriotism.
