JWST Finds 500 Million Year Galaxies Seeding Universe Today
Scientists using NASA James Webb Space Telescope have discovered early galaxies already seeding the universe with heavy metals just 500 million years after the Big Bang in deep space. According to http://Phys.org, researchers detected enriched gas escaping from primitive galaxies through baryon cycling in data published September 24 in Nature Astronomy.
The discovery rewrites early universe history. For years astronomers believed pristine gas containing only hydrogen and helium survived long after creation. New JWST evidence shows first galaxies were already polluting space with metals. The team tracked heavy elements moving from galaxy to galaxy, proving cosmic ecosystem started far earlier than models predicted.
The finding solves the mystery of Population III stars. These were the very first stars formed from pure gas. Because enrichment happened quickly, those pure stars vanished faster than telescopes can catch them. Researchers compared it to vanilla ice cream mixing with sprinkles. Within short time, no plain vanilla remains. JWST confirmed enriched material was flowing outside galaxies and fertilizing nearby space.
Baryon cycling is simple physics every SHS student can understand. Stars manufacture heavy elements like carbon and oxygen inside their cores. When they explode, they eject these metals into space. Winds and radiation push the gas out of one galaxy. Gravity then pulls it into another galaxy where new stars form. JWST observed this exchange just 500 million years after the Big Bang, far earlier than expected. It means universe recycling started at infancy.
Global impact is huge. If metals spread early, rocky planets like Earth could have formed much earlier, raising chances for early life. For Ghana, the discovery opens doors for KNUST, University of Ghana and UCC physics students to study JWST archival data. Space science jobs are growing. Ghanaian students who learn data analysis and astrophysics now will compete for international research slots.
