Senior Staff Union and Junior Staff Union of Electricity Company of Ghana will hold nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, to oppose Private Sector Participation in ECG. Unions said protest will start in all regions and end with presentation of petition to President John Dramani Mahama through regional ministers. Members say plan will undermine job security and national interest.
According to ECG joint staff resolution, unions have rejected government move to bring private investors into distribution operations. Leadership said PSP model is privatisation in disguise. They warned tariff hikes, layoffs and loss of strategic control will follow if Cabinet approves proposal. Staff have vowed to protect public asset built with taxpayer money.
Unions argue ECG losses are caused by political interference, non-payment by state agencies and weak metering, not workers. They said private sector has failed before in ECG concession under MiDA that collapsed in 2019. Workers insist reform should focus on revenue collection, prepaid expansion and technical loss reduction, not sale of collection mandate to private firms.
Government has not formally announced PSP details but Energy Ministry says it wants efficiency and investment to fix ECG debt of over 8 billion cedis. Public Utilities Regulatory Commission guidelines require due process before private participation. Labour law demands stakeholder consultation under Labour Act 2003, Act 651. Any demonstration must also comply with Public Order Act and police notification.
Petition to President Mahama through regional ministers will demand halt to PSP, audit of ECG finances, and stakeholder dialogue. Security agencies are expected to deploy across regional capitals on September 29. Unions say protest will be peaceful but total. Outcome could shape future of power distribution in Ghana.
