Mahama Champions Reparatory Justice at UN

President John Dramani Mahama is set to lead Ghana’s delegation to a high-level session at the United Nations, focusing on reparatory justice and the remembrance of victims of the transatlantic slave trade. The President’s visit to New York City and Pennsylvania is a significant opportunity for Ghana to amplify its voice on the global stage, pushing for recognition and redress for historical injustices.
According to #MahamaThePresident, the President will deliver a keynote address at a High-Level Special Event on Reparatory Justice at the United Nations Headquarters, bringing together global leaders and dignitaries to address the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. The event will provide a platform for Ghana to present its position, adopted by the African Union, recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as among the gravest crimes against humanity.
The President’s visit will also include a wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground Memorial in New York, paying tribute to the millions of Africans who lost their lives during the transatlantic slave trade. Mahama will also engage with academia and the Ghanaian community, including a visit to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, one of the oldest historically black universities in the United States.
“The transatlantic slave trade is a grave injustice that has had a profound impact on the world,” President Mahama said in a statement. “Ghana is committed to pushing for reparatory justice and recognition of the historical injustices inflicted upon Africans.”
The visit is part of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to push for reparations and recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity. The international community has a responsibility to acknowledge and address the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade, and Ghana is taking a leading role in this effort.
