Three persons have been confirmed dead and about fifteen others left injured following violent clashes that engulfed New Winneba in the Central Region on Tuesday, in one of the most bloody communal disturbances witnessed in the area in recent months.
The confrontation reportedly erupted at about ten forty in the morning when a crowd estimated at three hundred, allegedly wielding firearms, stones, cutlasses and clubs, stormed the New Winneba Township, attacking residents and vandalizing shops, stores and private properties. Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were swiftly deployed to contain the escalating violence.
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that one of those injured is a police officer, with all casualties currently receiving treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba. According to a MyJoyOnline publication, the assailants were reportedly mobilized from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, a claim that investigators are yet to independently corroborate.
In response to the deteriorating security situation, the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, ordered immediate reinforcement from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to bolster ground operations and prevent further bloodshed. The deployment has since restored relative calm, though security personnel remain strategically stationed to forestall reprisal attacks.
The motive behind the incursion remains unclear, and authorities have commenced full scale investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatalities and the broader destruction. The Police Service has assured the public of comprehensive updates as inquiries progress, while urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement.
