The Christian Council of Ghana has appealed to government to rise above political considerations and rekindle efforts toward completing the stalled National Cathedral, describing the edifice as a potential national religious and cultural landmark.
General Secretary of the Council, Reverend Dr Cyril Fayose, said Ghanaian Christians together with international organisations and donor partners remain ready to support the construction, provided the state offers the requisite endorsement and enabling environment to restart work.
Making the appeal during a courtesy call on the newly sworn in Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, the clergyman insisted that depoliticizing the project remains critical to its realization. According to a Citinewsroom report, Fayose declared that with divine grace and state blessing the project cannot fail, referencing its statutory backing and spiritual significance.
In response, Mr Ayariga expressed support for the concept of a National Cathedral but maintained that the original location was unsuitable, recalling his opposition while in the Minority to the demolition of residences occupied by superior court judges to pave way for the structure. He noted that the affected enclave housed Justices of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, making the decision inappropriate.
The National Cathedral initiative has been mired in prolonged controversy over financing, management and siting, leading to suspension of works. The renewed call by the Council reopens debate about consensus building, funding architecture and the balance between national symbolism and judicial accommodation.
