Mahamudu Bawumia Mourns Dagbon Overlord
As Ndan-Ya Na Abukari Mahama II, Overlord of Dagbon goes home and Hails His Legacy Of Peace and Unity

Former Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of His Majesty Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, describing his death as a monumental loss not only to Dagbon but also to the nation as a whole.
The death which was announced on Monday morning by the Head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai II, plunged the Dagbon Kingdom and the Country at large into mourning as many deliberate on his exceptional leadership.
In a condolence statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia extended his heartfelt sympathies to the chiefs, elders, royal family, and people of Dagbon following the death of the revered traditional ruler. He opened his message with the Islamic expression, “To Allah we belong completely and to Him shall we return ultimately,” emphasizing the solemnity of the occasion and the Islamic belief in the return of every soul to its Creator.
Dr. Bawumia praised the late Ya-Na for assuming the throne during one of the most difficult periods in the history of the Dagbon Kingdom. According to him, the late king demonstrated exceptional wisdom, patience, and resilience in navigating the kingdom through years of uncertainty and division.
He noted that the monarch’s leadership restored peace and stability while fostering unity among the people of Dagbon. Dr. Bawumia described the late Ya-Na as a traditional ruler whose reign, though relatively short, left an enduring impact on the kingdom.
The NPP presidential candidate highlighted the significant role played by Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II in healing long-standing divisions within Dagbon. He credited the late king with bringing together families and communities that had previously been divided, thereby strengthening social cohesion within the kingdom.
Beyond reconciliation, Dr. Bawumia commended the Ya-Na’s commitment to development, stating that he consistently advocated for major infrastructure and developmental projects aimed at improving the lives of the people of Dagbon. According to the statement, the late monarch successfully blended the rich traditions of Dagbon with modern leadership principles, earning widespread admiration for his statesmanship and vision.
Reflecting on their personal relationship, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that he greatly benefited from the counsel and guidance of the late Ya-Na throughout his tenure as Vice President of Ghana and later as the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party.
He recalled that visiting the historic Gbewaa Palace to pay homage to the king was always a privilege, describing the late monarch as a source of immeasurable wisdom whose advice profoundly influenced him.
Dr. Bawumia stated that the passing of Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II represents a significant loss to himself personally, the people of Dagbon, and Ghana at large.
He offered prayers for Allah to grant strength and comfort to the immediate family of the late king, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and the entire nation during this period of mourning.
Describing the death as a painful affliction, Dr. Bawumia called on Ghanaians to remember the remarkable contributions of the late monarch to peace, reconciliation, unity, and national development.
