Oppong Nkrumah Reacts After Court Dismisses Injunction Bid

Former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has responded defiantly after the Supreme Court dismissed his interlocutory injunction application seeking to restrain High Courts from sitting during the legal vacation. While acknowledging the adverse ruling, he argued that the judgment vindicates his central concern about uneven judicial treatment.

The apex court, in its determination, threw out the motion which sought to halt vacation sittings, a decision that paves the way for High Courts to continue operations during the recess. The bench maintained that such sittings are constitutionally permissible and vital for safeguarding timely access to justice.

However, Mr Oppong Nkrumah seized on a portion of the ruling to bolster his argument, asserting that the court itself conceded that certain cases are being accorded differential and expedited handling. He insisted that this admission underscores the substance of his critique regarding selective acceleration of judicial processes.

The Ofoase Ayirebi lawmaker stated that the dismissal notwithstanding, the court’s acknowledgment that some matters receive expeditious treatment validates public scrutiny. He described the observation as instructive for the broader conversation on equity and transparency in adjudication.

The case has ignited intense discourse within legal and political circles, with proponents of vacation courts defending their necessity for liberty related applications and urgent injunctions, while critics caution against perceptions of preferential dispatch. The Supreme Court’s decision is expected to settle the immediate procedural impasse, though the debate over evenhandedness may persist.
