Ahiagbah Accuses NDC of Political Intimidation
ACCRA — The New Patriotic Party has condemned the arrest of its Deputy Director of Communications, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, describing the action as a betrayal of the electoral mandate and a descent into partisan coercion. Speaking in Accra on Monday, NPP Director of Communications Richard Ahiagbah asserted that citizens entrusted the National Democratic Congress with governance to alleviate economic hardship, not to muzzle dissent.
Ahiagbah characterized the detention as emblematic of a broader pattern of political vindictiveness that threatens Ghana’s democratic fabric. He argued that the use of state apparatus against opposition figures erodes public confidence and diverts attention from pressing issues of cost of living, unemployment, and service delivery. “Ghanaians voted for the NDC to improve their lives, not to arrest and intimidate the opposition,” Ahiagbah stated, framing the incident as a misapplication of executive authority.
The NPP spokesman further contended that such measures corrode the tenets of pluralism and the rule of law. He maintained that robust opposition is indispensable to accountability, and that criminalizing political speech sets a perilous precedent. According to Ghana News Agency, Ahiagbah called on civil society, the diplomatic community, and traditional authorities to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the arrest and to demand due process.
Contextually, the episode unfolds amid heightened partisan friction following the 2024 general elections, which returned the NDC to power on promises of economic recovery and institutional reform. Analysts note that the transition period has been marked by reciprocal accusations of witch-hunting and governance deficits, a dynamic that risks polarizing the polity further. The arrest of a senior opposition communicator, therefore, is being interpreted within the party as both symbolic and strategic.
Ahiagbah concluded by urging the Mahama administration to recalibrate its priorities toward substantive governance rather than perceived retribution. He said the NPP would pursue all lawful avenues to secure Aboagye’s release and to safeguard democratic space. The development, he warned, will be a litmus test of the government’s commitment to tolerance and constitutionalism.
