Minority Demands Attorney General’s Resignation
The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called for the immediate resignation or dismissal of the Attorney General and Minister for Justice Dominic Ayine, accusing the office of incompetence over the release of GH¢350 million from the Contingency Fund for flood relief.
Addressing a press conference, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei alleged that the Attorney General failed to properly advise the government before the withdrawal was made, despite ongoing garnishee proceedings affecting the Contingency Fund.
According to the Minority, the disbursement breached established legal procedures because the fund was already the subject of court processes, making the withdrawal unlawful. Noting that any competent Attorney General could have secured the lawful release of these funds within 24 hours while letting the court operate in the way it was designed to
The caucus argued that the development raises serious concerns about the government’s adherence to the rule of law and prudent public financial management. It maintained that the Attorney General should be held accountable for what it described as a clear dereliction of duty, insisting that the country’s chief legal adviser ought to have ensured that all legal impediments surrounding the Contingency Fund were resolved before any withdrawal was authorised.
“The Attorney General has demonstrated gross incompetence in the discharge of his constitutional responsibilities and must either resign immediately or be dismissed by the President,” the Minority said.
The Minority’s allegations further contended that the procedural breach undermines public confidence in the management of state resources, particularly at a time when flood victims require urgent and transparent support.
The press statement of the Minority Caucus indicates that emergency interventions must still comply with the law and established financial procedures.
The Minority has therefore urged the president to relieve Dr Dominic Ayine off his duties as the State’s Attorney General. ” Should he fail to resign, we call on the President who swore an oath to to preserve and protect and defend this constitution to relieve him off office without delay” Patricia stated
