Star Oil Warns Against Fuel Purchases In Floods

Star Oil has advised motorists to defer non-essential refuelling as inundation raises the likelihood of water ingress into underground storage tanks, a development that could compromise fuel integrity and engine safety. The caution arrives amid heightened flood exposure across Accra.
Chief Executive Kwame Tieku said the company’s field teams are conducting active surveillance for infiltration at retail outlets, with containment protocols engaged where risk thresholds are breached. The advisory is precautionary, aimed at averting the dispensing of adulterated product and protecting consumers from potential mechanical damage.
Tieku issued a direct public notice. “Avoid buying fuel unless it’s urgent. Floods pose a high risk of water entering underground fuel tanks. Our Star Oil teams are actively monitoring for water infiltration,” he stated. The statement foregrounds safety over sales volume during the inclement period.
Water contamination of petroleum occurs when hydrostatic pressure and compromised seals permit ingress into subterranean reservoirs. Even modest dilution can impair combustion, corrode fuel systems and trigger downstream liabilities for retailers. In a flood-prone capital, vigilance across the value chain becomes a non-negotiable operational standard.
The episode underscores broader resilience gaps in fuel logistics, from tank integrity and forecourt drainage to emergency response readiness. Regulatory oversight, routine hydrostatic testing and climate-adaptive infrastructure will be critical to safeguarding supply quality as extreme rainfall events become more frequent.
Star Oil’s warning is a timely risk-communication measure that prioritises consumer protection over commerce. The imperative now is sustained monitoring, transparent incident disclosure and sector-wide adoption of flood-hardened standards. Prudence at the pump today may prevent costly breakdowns tomorrow.
