Ghana Seeks $22.6 Billion to Combat Climate Change

Ghana is facing a daunting challenge in its quest to mitigate the impacts of climate change, with the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, revealing that the country requires an estimated $22.6 billion to implement sustainable environmental interventions and protect vulnerable communities. According to #CitiNewsroom, the minister emphasized that Ghana cannot tackle this challenge alone and is seeking strategic partnerships with international organizations and development partners to mobilize the necessary resources.

Issifu stressed that the country’s climate-related needs are urgent, citing the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events, coastal erosion, food insecurity, and energy vulnerabilities. He noted that Ghana’s climate actions, as outlined in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), require significant investment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen climate resilience.

The minister highlighted Ghana’s collaboration with the European Union as a key component of the country’s climate financing strategy. He emphasized that international cooperation and sustained financial support are crucial in advancing Ghana’s climate agenda and achieving its development goals.

Ghana’s climate change efforts are aligned with the Paris Agreement, and the country has committed to implementing 31 mitigation and adaptation actions across seven economic sectors. However, the financing gap remains a significant obstacle, with current funding levels covering only a fraction of the required investment.

According to the United Nations Development Programme, Ghana’s NDCs require $22.6 billion in funding for implementation over a ten-year period. The minister’s call for international support underscores the need for global cooperation in addressing the climate crisis.
