Fire Guts Ibrahim Mahama’s Heritage Train in North

A devastating fire has destroyed a heritage train belonging to renowned Ghanaian creative artist and author Ibrahim Mahama in the Northern Region. The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 18, during repair works on the ageing rail asset.

According to Graphic Online, the fire was caused by sparks from ongoing repairs, and despite the efforts of the Ghana National Fire Service, the train was reduced to ashes. The train, which was part of Ghana’s oldest railway stock, had been acquired by Mahama nearly two years ago and was awaiting body repairs due to extensive rust.

Mahama described the incident as a “tragic misfortune” and expressed gratitude that no one was injured. “Our hearts may be broken, but our spirits are as high as ever,” he said in a Facebook post. He also thanked the Ghana National Fire Service for their swift response and the local community for their support.

The train was a significant piece of Ghana’s industrial and cultural heritage, and its destruction is a major loss. Mahama had preserved the train as part of his efforts to safeguard the country’s historical artefacts.

The incident has sparked concerns about fire safety, particularly during the dry season. Mahama has urged the public to exercise caution to prevent similar incidents.

The destruction of the heritage train is a setback for Ghana’s railway heritage, and it remains to be seen whether it can be restored.
