Tragedy Strikes Volta Region as Girl Drowns

A heartbreaking incident has shaken the Volta Region, where a six-year-old girl, Sarah Ahiafor, lost her life after drowning in an irrigation pond at Sonitra, a suburb of Kpetoe. According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the incident occurred on Sunday, February 1, 2026, when Sarah accompanied other children to wash clothes at the pond.

The rescue team, led by Assistant Station Officer David Dzakah, swiftly responded to a distress call at about 1:40 p.m. and retrieved Sarah’s body from the water. Unfortunately, all efforts to resuscitate her proved unsuccessful. The body has been handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation and preservation.

Preliminary findings indicate that the drowning occurred while Sarah was in the company of other minors who had visited the site without adult supervision. The Ghana National Fire Service has issued a stern warning to parents and guardians, urging them to closely monitor children and prevent them from visiting irrigation ponds and other open water bodies without adult supervision.

“The GNFS advises parents and guardians to ensure that children do not visit or engage in activities around ponds, irrigation sites, and other open water bodies without adult supervision,” the statement read. The Fire Service has also extended condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting life and property.

The incident has raised concerns about child safety and the need for increased vigilance around open water bodies. As the community mourns the loss of young Sarah, the Ghana National Fire Service is calling on parents and guardians to take responsibility for ensuring their children’s safety.
