GHOne’s Lily Mohammed Apologizes to Minister Ablakwa

Lily Mohammed, a prominent Ghanaian media personality and presenter on GHOne TV, has issued a public apology to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for her earlier criticism. The apology comes after Mohammed strongly condemned the minister’s decision to grant a Ghanaian passport to American YouTuber IShowSpeed, describing it as “not serious”.

According to reports on GHOne Newsroom, Mohammed admitted that some of her comments were “overboard” and acknowledged that her choice of language may have offended viewers and the minister. “I concede that some of my words were overboard and unsavory, and I sincerely apologize to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa, as well as to viewers who were offended,” she said.

The controversy began when Mohammed questioned the rationale behind granting IShowSpeed a Ghanaian passport, suggesting that it diminished the value of Ghanaian citizenship. She argued that while IShowSpeed’s visit promoted Ghana globally, issuing him a passport was unnecessary, especially when many Ghanaian citizens struggle to access passports.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs had announced the decision, citing IShowSpeed’s ancestral connection to Ghana and his positive projection of the country on the global stage. The move sparked intense debate, with some supporting Mohammed’s concerns and others criticizing her tone.

Mohammed’s apology has attracted mixed reactions, with some viewers commending her for taking responsibility for her words, while others continue to debate the broader issues surrounding passport access and citizenship criteria.

The incident highlights the ongoing discussion about Ghana’s passport policies and the value of citizenship.
