Uganda's Stolen Election: Museveni's Grip on Power Sparks Outrage

A shocking video posted on opposition leader Bobi Wine’s verified Facebook page shows Electoral Commission officials allegedly marking ballot papers in favor of President Yoweri Museveni at a polling station in western Uganda, sparking widespread outrage and protests across the country.

According to reports, the election was marred by irregularities, including the arrest and abduction of opposition agents and officials, and internet shutdowns. Bobi Wine, who finished second in the election, has rejected the results, claiming widespread fraud and intimidation. “We campaigned. We voted. We tried to protect our vote, but the criminals arrested or abducted many of our agents and officials. The only recourse is for the PEOPLE OF UGANDA to reclaim their voice,” he said.

The African Union has endorsed the election outcome, but Western governments have expressed concern about the process. Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, was declared the winner with 71.61% of the vote. A senior presidential aide, Yiga Wamala, sparked controversy by stating that Museveni’s grip on power is unlikely to be loosened through the electoral process, hinting at a possible succession plan for Museveni’s son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Protests have turned violent, with at least 12 people killed in clashes between security forces and opposition supporters. Bobi Wine’s home was also besieged by security forces, and several opposition figures have been arrested or gone into hiding. The situation remains tense, with Uganda’s future hanging in the balance.

According to the opposition, the election was a “protest vote” and Ugandans are calling for a rerun. The Electoral Commission has defended its handling of the vote, citing biometric voter verification failures as the cause of delays.

As the country awaits the final declaration of the presidential results, tensions remain high, and the international community is watching closely.
