Referee Laryea Speaks Out Amidst AFCON Controversy

Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea has broken his silence following the controversy surrounding his officiating in the AFCON semi-final match between Nigeria and Morocco. Laryea, who refereed the tense clash in Rabat, has faced intense scrutiny from Nigerian fans and pundits, with many accusing him of bias in favor of Morocco.
According to GhanaWeb, Laryea remained unfazed by the criticism, stating “It’s good. It’s football” when approached by Nigerian journalist Klinton Kod on the streets of Morocco. The Ghanaian referee’s calm demeanor amidst the backlash has been praised by many.
The controversy surrounding Laryea’s officiating has sparked a heated debate, with some alleging that his decisions favored Morocco. One of the most debated decisions was the yellow card shown to Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey, which ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament.
Nigerian players Akor Adams and Bright Osayi-Samuel also openly criticized Laryea’s performance, with Osayi-Samuel describing it as “appalling”. The backlash led to Laryea’s Instagram account being taken down, reportedly due to mass reporting by frustrated Nigerian fans.
Morocco coach Walid Regragui has slammed conspiracy theorists who suggest referees have been favoring the home team, urging supporters to focus on the game rather than refereeing controversies.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has urged Nigerians to move on from the match, describing the incidents as “circumstances and challenges” that the team coped well with.
