NPP Lacks Practical Economic Ideas – Prof Kobby Mensah

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, Prof Kobby Mensah, has slammed the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for lacking practical ideas in managing the economy during its eight-year rule, describing it as a “Talk Talk Party”.

Prof Mensah made this comment in response to the NPP’s demand for a probe into the alleged $214 million loss by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). He questioned the NPP’s economic track record, asking which of their ideas reduced the pound sterling from 23 cedis to 14, the dollar from 16 to 11 cedis, or fuel prices from 20/litre to 10.37.

The Ghana Tourism Development Company CEO emphasized that the current government has made significant strides in stabilizing the economy, citing the cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar and reduced inflation. He urged the NPP to focus on presenting practical solutions rather than engaging in “needless” press conferences.

The NPP’s Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah had demanded a bipartisan committee to investigate GoldBod’s operations, including its fee structure and foreign exchange arrangements. However, Prof Mensah believes this is just a political gsm and that the NPP should instead focus on its own economic failures.

The public has reacted mixedly to Prof Mensah’s comments, with some supporting his stance and others accusing him of being biased. The debate highlights the ongoing economic challenges facing Ghana and the need for practical solutions from all political parties.

The Ghanaian economy has shown signs of improvement, with inflation declining over 11 consecutive months and the cedi appreciating by over 35% against the US dollar.
