UG Orders Withdrawal Of Students Below One Point CGPA

Accra, Legon – The University of Ghana has directed its undergraduate scholars whose cumulative grade point average fell beneath the one point threshold at the close of the twenty twenty five to twenty twenty six academic year to withdraw from their respective programmes in strict adherence to institutional academic regulations.

The directive, communicated through the university registry following the ratification of end of year results by the appropriate academic board, affects students across colleges, faculties and departments who failed to attain the minimum academic standing prescribed for progression. University officials described the measure as routine enforcement rather than punitive action, emphasizing that academic progression at Legon remains contingent on sustained scholarly performance and not mere enrollment.

According to the Registrar, the university remains committed to upholding academic integrity while providing counselling and reapplication pathways for affected students, noting that the decision reflects a broader institutional resolve to preserve the value and credibility of a Ghana degree.

The policy derives from longstanding statutes governing academic progression, which stipulate minimum grade thresholds for continuation, probation and eventual withdrawal. Historically, the University of Ghana has applied these standards with varying degrees of leniency, but recent reforms toward academic excellence have intensified enforcement, aligning the institution with global best practice in higher education quality assurance.

For many families, the pronouncement carries profound emotional and financial implications, particularly for those who have invested years of tuition and accommodation in anticipation of graduation. Educationists argue that while standards must be protected, the university owes a pastoral duty to ensure transparent communication, adequate appeals mechanisms and structured readmission opportunities for those willing to demonstrate renewed academic commitment.

The development signals a definitive moment in the ongoing discourse on standards versus access in Ghanaian tertiary education, compelling stakeholders to interrogate the balance between institutional prestige and student welfare. Affected students are expected to receive formal communication from their respective departments, with the university advising them to consult academic counsellors before the commencement of the next academic cycle.
