The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has suspended its nationwide strike after government addressed 80 percent of its concerns over disparities in market premiums and allowances between teaching and non-teaching staff in public universities. The suspension takes effect from Friday, October 16, 2026, with members expected to resume work on Monday, October 19, 2026.

National President of GAUA, Rev. Kwaku Karikari Amoah, announced the decision after a unanimous resolution by the National Executive Committee (NEC) following a final engagement with the Ministry of Education. He said after thorough evaluation, the association concluded that about 80% of its grievances have been met, including issues of market premium, wrongful placement on the Single Spine Salary Structure, a negotiated 40 per cent allowance for professionals, extension of retirement rollover, and a one-off research allowance payment.

According to Rev. Amoah, the government has facilitated payment warrants for the one-time research allowance from the Ministry of Finance, while the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has addressed the interim market premium disparities. The strike, which began on August 10, 2026, had disrupted administrative services including admissions, transcript processing, and results publication, leading to postponement of reopening dates at University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) has also suspended its month-long strike on similar grounds, with its President Stanley Abopaam confirming that members will resume work on Monday. Both associations said the remaining 20% of concerns, including final placement corrections and full retirement rollover extension beyond the fifth year, will continue to be negotiated with the FWSC, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the Ministry of Finance.

GAUA thanked the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, for facilitating the engagement and expressed optimism that the remaining outstanding issues will be addressed within the window opened for further discussions. The association represents senior administrative staff including registrars, admissions officers, finance officers and student affairs officers across public universities, and its return is expected to restore normalcy to academic administration.
