Emelia Affi Agbenyo will be treated as a footsoldier. She’s a die-hard NDC loyalist, her rightful office is at NDC headquarters, not the Electoral Commission, Kwesi Botchway Jnr. Esq., NPP Communications Team Member, has stated. He was speaking on GHOneTV on the controversial appointment of the new Electoral Commission Deputy Chairperson.
According to Lawyer Botchway Jnr., the appointment of Mrs. Agbenyo, who has openly worked with the National Democratic Congress in the past, erodes public confidence in the Electoral Commission as an independent body. He argued that the EC must be seen to be neutral and that appointing a known partisan figure undermines its credibility ahead of future elections.
Emelia Afi Agbenyo was sworn in on Monday, 12th October, 2026 together with Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission by President John Dramani Mahama. The appointments follow the resignation of Dr. Bossman Asare and the retirement of Mr. Samuel Tettey. Government has defended the choice, with Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu describing her as a consummate professional and gender activist rather than a politician.
But Kwesi Botchway Jnr. on GHOneTV insisted that her NDC roots cannot be whitewashed. He said the NPP communications machinery and party supporters will treat her as a footsoldier of the NDC and not as a neutral arbiter. He questioned why a self-acclaimed NDC loyalist should be entrusted with supervising elections in which the NDC will be a contestant.
The NPP communicator maintained that her rightful office should be at the NDC headquarters and not at the EC headquarters. He warned that the party will be vigilant and will hold her actions under intense scrutiny, adding that any attempt at bias will be exposed.
The debate over Mrs. Agbenyo’s appointment continues to trend, with NDC supporters praising her professional background in TVET, gender inclusion and international development, while NPP voices demand neutrality at the Electoral Commission.
