President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to import rechargeable wheelchairs for persons with disabilities across Ghana as part of a renewed commitment to inclusive development and social protection. The President made the announcement while addressing stakeholders on disability inclusion and decentralization in Accra today.
According to President Mahama, the rechargeable wheelchairs will provide enhanced mobility, independence and dignity for persons with physical disabilities, especially in rural communities where movement remains a major challenge. He noted that government is sourcing modern, durable and battery-powered wheelchairs that can navigate Ghanaian terrain and support economic participation.

In a major policy shift, President Mahama also announced an increase in the share of the District Assemblies Common Fund reserved for persons with disabilities from 3% to 5%. He explained that the increment is aimed at expanding support for education, healthcare, skills training and livelihood empowerment for persons with disabilities at the district level.
The President said the 3% allocation has over the years proven inadequate to meet the growing needs of persons with disabilities, leading to delays and inadequate coverage. Raising it to 5% will ensure that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies have more resources to implement disability-friendly projects and provide direct financial assistance.

Disability rights advocates have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a bold step toward inclusion and equity. They note that rechargeable wheelchairs will reduce the physical burden on caregivers and enable persons with disabilities to participate more actively in economic and social life.
President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to leaving no one behind in Ghana’s development agenda, stressing that persons with disabilities remain a vital part of the nation’s human resource. The importation programme and fund increase are expected to be rolled out in collaboration with the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations and district assemblies nationwide.
