Newly appointed Deputy EC Chair, Emelia Afi Agbenyo is an active NDC partisan operative, and her appointment is wrong, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated. The NPP stalwart raised concerns over the neutrality of the Electoral Commission following her swearing-in today.
According to Mr Aboagye, Mrs Emelia Afi Agbenyo has openly been associated with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and has served in various partisan capacities, which he says disqualifies her from holding a sensitive, independent position at the EC. He argued that the EC must be seen to be impartial, and appointing a known party operative undermines public confidence in Ghana’s electoral process.

Speaking on EIB Network on Monday, 12th October, 2026, Mr Aboagye said the NPP will formally petition the appropriate bodies and seek clarification on the vetting process that led to her appointment. He noted that while President John Dramani Mahama has the constitutional mandate to appoint EC deputies, such appointments must reflect the principles of fairness, neutrality and broad national consensus.
The NPP Communications Director further stated that Ghana’s democracy thrives on credible elections, and any perception of bias at the Electoral Commission could erode trust ahead of future polls. He called on civil society, religious bodies and international observers to take interest in the matter to safeguard the integrity of the EC.

Mrs Emelia Afi Agbenyo, who was sworn in today alongside Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, is described by government as an international development and corporate management consultant with extensive experience. Her appointment follows the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare and the retirement of Mr Samuel Tettey as Deputy Chairpersons of the EC.
Supporters of the NDC have, however, defended the appointment, arguing that Mrs Agbenyo is qualified and that her professional track record speaks for itself. They accuse the NPP of politicizing a legitimate appointment. The Electoral Commission is yet to respond officially to the allegations, as reported by EIB Network.
