Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, has strongly defended the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission. According to the minister, she is a consummate professional who will not be partisan in the discharge of her duties at the Electoral Commission.

Speaking on the appointment, Kwakye Ofosu acknowledged that while she has worked with the NDC in the past, she is more of a social and gender activist than a politician. He stressed that her track record in international development, corporate management and inclusive governance makes her fit for the high office of Deputy Chairperson of the EC.

The new Deputy Chairpersons, Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah and Mrs. Emelia Afi Agbenyo, were sworn into office on Monday, 12th October, 2026 at the Presidency by President John Dramani Mahama. Their appointments follow the resignation of Dr. Bossman Asare and the retirement of Mr. Samuel Tettey. President Mahama charged them to discharge their mandate without fear or favour.

Kwakye Ofosu’s defence comes after some opposition voices, including NPP’s Dennis Miracles Aboagye, alleged that Mrs. Agbenyo is an NDC partisan due to her past work with the party. The Minister dismissed the claims, insisting that her activism has centered on gender equality, disability inclusion, skills development and technical and vocational education, including her role as Deputy Director for Operations at Ghana TVET Service and Commissioner at National Development Planning Commission.
