Agblonu Gets Solar Borehole As Volta Minister Marks Birthday
Volta Regional Minister Hon James Gunu has commissioned a solar powered mechanized borehole at Agblonu in the Akatsi North District to provide reliable potable water for residents. The commissioning, held today, formed part of activities marking the Minister’s birthday and was witnessed by chiefs, elders and NDC executives.
According to organizers, the project was executed through collaboration between the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, Akatsi North District Assembly and community stakeholders to address chronic water challenges at Agblonu. The solar powered system will ensure all year pumping without reliance on national grid or fuel.
The event was attended by Akatsi North NDC Constituency Chairman Dr Richard Awudza, constituency and branch executives, as well as chiefs and elders of Agblonu. Speaking at the ceremony, leaders commended Hon James Gunu for choosing a development oriented birthday celebration that directly improves health and wellbeing of the people. Residents said the borehole will reduce trekking for water and cut waterborne diseases.
The evergreen explainer is that mechanized boreholes in Ghana are regulated by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and the Water Resources Commission which licenses groundwater abstraction. Solar powered systems are promoted under the Renewable Energy Act 2011 Act 832 as sustainable alternative to grid powered pumps. Similar to how CSSPS manages school placement and WASSCE grading standardizes assessment, borehole projects require geophysical survey, water quality testing and Environmental Protection Agency permitting to ensure safe potable supply and long term functionality.
Hon James Gunu described the intervention as part of Volta Region’s agenda to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation. He thanked NDC executives, chiefs and technical teams whose efforts made the project possible. He said the mantra Building Akatsi North Transforming Lives reflects commitment to inclusive development where birthdays are celebrated by giving back to communities rather than lavish parties.
The chiefs of Agblonu expressed gratitude and pledged to maintain the facility through a community water committee. The District Assembly will train local technicians to handle routine maintenance and revenue collection for sustainability.
