Miracles Aboagye Arrested by EOCO
He Was Allegedly Arrested Hours After Declaring NPP Communications Director Bid
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 presidential campaign, has reportedly been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Kotoka International Airport.
The reported arrest occurred on Sunday, July 12, just hours after Aboagye publicly announced his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the NPP in the party’s upcoming internal elections.
According to reports, EOCO officials, with the assistance of immigration authorities, picked up Aboagye at the airport before taking him into custody. The arrest is said to be linked to ongoing investigations into alleged corruption-related matters connected to his tenure as Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCC).
The specific allegations under investigation have not yet been officially disclosed, and EOCO is yet to issue a formal statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
The development has sparked widespread political interest, particularly because it came shortly after Aboagye declared his bid for one of the NPP’s key national executive positions. In announcing his candidature earlier in the day, he pledged to strengthen the party’s communication machinery and help reposition the NPP ahead of future electoral contests.
Following news of the arrest, senior figures within the NPP including Justin Frimpong Kodua, expressed concern over the circumstances of his detention. Party officials indicated that efforts were being made to ascertain the basis of the arrest and ensure that his legal rights were protected.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye has been one of the NPP’s prominent communicators in recent years, serving as a key spokesperson for the party and playing a leading role in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 presidential campaign. He previously served as Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation, where he oversaw aspects of Ghana’s decentralisation and local governance agenda.
As of the time of publication, neither EOCO nor Aboagye had issued an official statement regarding the reported arrest. It also remains unclear whether he has been formally charged with any offence.
