President Commends Citizens for The National Sanitation Exercise

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound appreciation to Ghanaians who participated in the nationwide community clean-up exercise on Friday following the June 29 devastating floods, describing their commitment as a significant contribution to the country’s efforts to improve environmental sanitation.

The President commended individuals, community groups, institutions, and volunteers who came out in large numbers to clean their surroundings, stressing that the success of the exercise demonstrated the essence of collective action in addressing nationwide sanitation challenges.

According to him, maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of every citizen. He noted that the clean-up exercise was not merely a one-day event but part of a broader national effort aimed at promoting healthier communities, preventing disease outbreaks, and improving the overall quality of life.

“Let me, once again, thank everyone who came out on Friday to clean their communities and contribute to this national effort. It is for our collective good,” the President said.

He urged the public not to regard the initiative as an occasional campaign but to adopt cleanliness as a continuous civic responsibility. He emphasized that sustained environmental sanitation would help reduce the spread of sanitation-related diseases, protect natural ecosystems, and create more attractive and livable communities.

President Mahama further encouraged residents to take ownership of their neighborhoods by ensuring proper waste disposal, keeping drains free from refuse, and supporting local sanitation initiatives. He stressed that government efforts alone would not be sufficient to maintain a clean environment without the consistent cooperation of citizens.

Meanwhile, the clean-up exercise is expected to continue as the second phase of the exercise proceeds all over the country. Stakeholders including metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies, traditional authorities, civil society organisations, individuals and the private sector are called upon to continue supporting initiatives that promote cleanliness and public health.

President Mahama concluded by urging Ghanaians to sustain the momentum generated by the clean-up exercise, emphasizing that a cleaner environment would benefit present and future generations.

“We must continue to do this to keep our environment clean,” he stated, reiterating that environmental cleanliness is a collective responsibility that serves the national interest.
