Somaliland Offers US Access to Minerals and Bases

Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, is willing to grant the United States access to its mineral resources and military bases, Minister of the Presidency Khadir Hussein Abdi said in an interview. This move is part of Somaliland’s push for international recognition, which it has been seeking since declaring autonomy from Somalia in 1991.

According to AFP, Abdi stated, “We are willing to give exclusive access to our minerals to the United States. Also, we are open to offering military bases to the United States.” The region has significant natural resources, including lithium and coltan, critical for high-tech and defense industries {{IE_0}}ยน{{/IE_0}}.

Somaliland’s strategic location near the Gulf of Aden, a key shipping lane, makes it an attractive partner for the US. The region has been stable since the late 1990s, unlike Somalia, which has experienced chaos and conflict. Israel recognized Somaliland’s independence in December 2025, a move condemned by Somalia and most African and Arab leaders.

The US has not signaled a major shift on recognizing Somaliland, maintaining its stance of recognizing “one Somalia”. However, US President Donald Trump has suggested considering recognition, citing Somaliland’s stability and strategic importance.

Somaliland’s offer comes amid ongoing talks between the US and Iran, with the US seeking to constrain Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The region’s potential military bases and mineral resources could play a significant role in regional security dynamics.

Somaliland’s push for recognition continues, with its leaders optimistic about reaching an agreement with the US.
