Uganda’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, has announced the first preliminary results of the 2026 presidential election, with incumbent President Yoweri Museveni leading with 61.7% of the votes counted so far.

According to NTV News, Museveni has garnered 14,232 votes, representing 61.7% of the 23,049 valid votes cast from 133 polling stations. Opposition leader Bobi Wine, also known as Kyagulanyi, trails behind with 7,753 votes, representing 33.64%.

The next update is expected at 9:00 AM on January 16, 2026. The electoral commission has assured citizens that the results will be announced within 48 hours after the close of polling, as mandated by the Presidential Elections Act.

Justice Byabakama has dismissed threats aimed at influencing the outcome of the election, stating that only the law and the will of the voters will determine the results. “I am not in the business of donating votes,” he said, adding that the commission will declare the results as per the law.

Uganda’s presidential election has been marked by tension, with opposition supporters expressing concerns about the fairness of the electoral process. The government has deployed security forces across the country to maintain peace and order.

The outcome of the election is expected to have significant implications for Uganda’s future, with many citizens hoping for stability and opportunities.
