Man Remanded Over Fake Military Plot Claim

The Adenta Circuit Court has remanded a 30-year-old laundry attendant, Ahmed Hassan Abdul Razzaq, into police custody for allegedly publishing false news intended to cause fear and panic. According to Ghana News Agency, Razzaq posted a video on his TikTok account, @breakingnewsghana, claiming that two military officers were plotting to assassinate former President John Dramani Mahama.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, stated that Razzaq’s actions were intended to cause public unrest and fear. The court did not take Razzaq’s plea and ordered that he remain in custody until his next appearance on February 9, 2026.
According to the facts presented, Razzaq claimed he had chanced upon a post on social media alleging the assassination plot, which prompted him to publish the video. However, he failed to direct investigators to the source of the alleged post. In his caution statement, Razzaq admitted to making the video but said he had never met the officers and did not know them personally.
The Ghana Police Service has expressed concern over the spread of false information on social media, emphasizing the need for responsible online behavior. The case has sparked widespread discussion on the importance of verifying information before sharing it online.
The remand of Razzaq serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of spreading false information. The court will determine the next course of action on February 9, 2026.
