Ridge Hospital Under Fire: Ministry Launches Probe into Alleged Extortion

The Ministry of Health has announced plans to investigate allegations of unprofessional conduct and extortion at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, also known as Ridge Hospital, following a scathing exposé by The Fourth Estate.
According to The Fourth Estate’s report, some medical officers at Ridge Hospital have been allegedly demanding unofficial payments from patients for services, with one patient being charged $7,000 for a brain surgery without proper explanation. The investigation revealed that surgeons often bypass official procurement channels, sending patients to private pharmacies instead, raising concerns about collusion and exploitation.
The Ministry of Health has described the allegations as “serious and deserving of scrutiny” and is constituting an investigative committee to look into the matter. “The Ministry sympathises with patients and relatives who may have been subjected to any form of unprofessional conduct in any health facility across the country,” the statement said.
The committee is expected to submit its findings within 14 working days, and the Ministry has called on all relevant stakeholders, including The Fourth Estate, to cooperate fully with the investigation.
The allegations have sparked widespread concern, with many calling for accountability and improved service delivery in Ghana’s healthcare system. The government has reiterated its commitment to reducing the financial burden on patients and ensuring quality healthcare.
The investigation comes amid growing concerns about corruption and mismanagement in Ghana’s healthcare sector. The outcome of the probe is eagerly awaited, with many hoping it will bring about much-needed reforms.
