Wontumi's Galamsey Trial: Courtroom Drama Unfolds

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, left the Accra High Court after today’s proceedings, his legal team gearing up for a crucial cross-examination of the prosecution’s third witness on January 26, 2026. The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is facing charges related to alleged illegal mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region.
According to 3 News, Wontumi’s trial has been marked by twists and turns, with his legal team arguing that he poses no flight risk and will cooperate fully with investigations. The prosecution, however, has called for stringent bail conditions, citing the seriousness of the charges and Wontumi’s financial standing.
Wontumi was granted bail in the sum of GHC 15 million with three sureties, two of whom must provide landed property within the court’s jurisdiction. He has also been banned from traveling and must report to investigators on the first and third Monday of every month.
The charges against Wontumi stem from alleged unauthorized mining operations at Samreboi, invoking key provisions of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 995). His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has maintained that Wontumi is innocent and will clear his name.
The trial has sparked intense public interest, with many Ghanaians following the proceedings closely. As the case resumes on January 26, all eyes will be on the Accra High Court.
The outcome of this trial is eagerly awaited, with implications for Ghana’s fight against illegal mining.
