Ghana Streamlines Youth Migration Program for Dignified Employment Abroad
The Ghanaian government is set to enhance its Youth Employment Agency (YEA) Work Abroad Program by integrating it with the Labour Exchange Program, aiming to provide Ghanaian youth with dignified and structured international employment opportunities. According to the Minister for Youth Empowerment and Development, George Opare Addo, the initiative seeks to ensure safe and legal migration, fair labor practices, and comprehensive skill development for participants.
The program targets various sectors, including healthcare, tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, and business process outsourcing, offering seasonal, temporary, internship, and exchange roles. According to reports, participants will undergo cultural orientation, technical training, and pre-departure coaching, ensuring they are well-prepared for their roles abroad.
The YEA Work Abroad Program is expected to contribute significantly to Ghana’s socio-economic development, generating over $10 billion in annual foreign exchange earnings. The government projects that the program will reduce youth unemployment, upskill the national workforce, and promote Ghana’s global competitiveness.
According to the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme, the initiative will prioritize skilled and unskilled laborers, with immediate demand for workers in western and Asian countries. The program will provide participants with initial contract periods ranging from 9 months to 2 years, with options for renewal.
The government has emphasized the importance of ensuring participants’ safety and rights, with dedicated desks at various embassies to handle issues and queries. Memoranda of understanding will be signed with host countries to protect workers’ rights.
The YEA Work Abroad Program is open to Ghanaian youth, including graduates, trainees, and individuals seeking seasonal employment abroad, aged 22-35 years old.
