Rising Costs Squeeze Ghanaians: Kenkey and Water Prices Skyrocket

Ghana’s economic woes are taking a toll on citizens, with staple foods and essential commodities becoming increasingly unaffordable. Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign, has highlighted the plumbing costs, citing examples of kenkey selling for GHS 10, bottled water at GHS 36, and sachet water at GHS 10.

According to reports, these price hikes are part of a broader trend of rising inflation, with the Ghana Statistical Service indicating a 17.8% increase in the cost of kenkey with fried fish. The main driver behind this surge is the escalating cost of maize, a key ingredient in kenkey production, which has seen a staggering 54.9% year-on-year inflation.

The situation is dire for many Ghanaians, with vendors forced to increase prices or reduce portion sizes to stay afloat. Kenkey sellers in Accra’s Tudu, Adabraka, Osu, and Jamestown areas are particularly hard hit, with some considering selling pepper separately to cope with rising costs.

The increasing cost of living has sparked concerns about food security and the government’s ability to address the issue. Agricultural experts are calling for bold steps to strengthen food production and stabilize prices.

As Ghanaians grapple with these economic challenges, the fate of staple foods like kenkey will serve as a reflection of the country’s broader economic struggles.
