China Launches Military Drills Around Taiwan in ‘Stern Warning’

China’s military has launched large-scale drills around Taiwan, deploying army, navy, air, and rocket units in a show of force aimed at testing combat readiness and warning against Taiwanese independence. The exercises, dubbed “Just Mission 2025,” involve live-fire drills and simulated strikes on land and maritime targets.
The drills come amid heightened tensions between China and Taiwan, following an $11.1 billion US weapons sale to Taiwan and comments from Japan’s prime minister suggesting potential involvement if China attacks the island. Taiwan’s government has condemned the drills, accusing China of military intimidation and undermining regional peace.
China’s Eastern Theater Command says the exercises will focus on maritime and aerial combat readiness patrols, gaining integrated control, and blockading key ports. The drills are expected to continue on Tuesday, with activities including live firing and simulated strikes.
Taiwan’s military is on high alert, with rapid response exercises underway to defend the island. The country’s defense ministry has deployed forces and is working to minimize the impact on maritime routes and fishing areas. Taiwan’s president has vowed to strengthen indigenous defense capabilities and raise the cost of potential aggression.
The situation is being closely watched, with analysts saying the drills demonstrate China’s progress in modernizing its military and serve as a strong signal to Taiwan’s allies, including the US and Japan, that Beijing could block external support during a conflict.
