The Ministry of Transport is set to present a bill to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, according to the Majority Leader. The proposal has sparked debate, with some Ghanaians expressing mixed reactions on social media.
According to Joy News, the Majority Leader stated that the bill is part of efforts to rebrand the country’s image and improve the airport’s international standing. The renaming would bring the airport’s name in line with global standards, making it easier for visitors to identify the country’s capital city.
The Kotoka International Airport is a major hub for air travel in West Africa, serving as a key gateway to Ghana. The facility has undergone significant upgrades in recent years, including the construction of a new terminal building.
While some Ghanaians have welcomed the proposal, others have expressed concerns about the potential costs and implications of renaming the airport. The late Lt. Col. Emmanuel Kotoka, a national hero, was honored with the naming of the airport after him in recognition of his role in the 1966 coup that overthrew the country’s first president.
The Ministry of Transport has not yet provided details on the proposed bill, including the timeline for its presentation to parliament. If passed, the renaming would require significant updates to signage, documents, and other materials bearing the airport’s name.
The move is seen as part of broader efforts to modernize Ghana’s aviation sector and improve its global competitiveness.
