NPP Confident of Winning Ayawaso East Seat
NPP Confident of Winning Ayawaso East By-Election Amidst NDC Test

Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Asiamah, has expressed confidence in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) chances of winning the Ayawaso East by-election, describing it as a test for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The seat became vacant following the death of NDC MP Naser Toure Mahama.
According to the Ghana Embassy news, the NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has stated that the party will contest the by-election and is confident of victory. Kodua emphasized that the party has begun selecting a suitable candidate for the seat, rejecting suggestions that the NPP should refrain from contesting out of respect for the late MP.
The Ayawaso East constituency has traditionally been an NDC stronghold, with the late MP winning the seat with 70.85% of the vote in the 2024 general elections. However, the NPP is optimistic about its chances, with Kodua stating that the party will unveil its candidate before the Electoral Commission opens nominations.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Ayawaso East had appealed to the NPP not to field a candidate as a mark of respect for the late MP, but Kodua dismissed the suggestion, citing past by-elections where the NDC contested despite the NPP’s decision not to contest.
The by-election is expected to be a closely contested race, with the NPP looking to capitalize on its development agenda and the NDC seeking to retain the seat.
