10-Year Single Term for Electoral Commission Leadership

CRC Proposes 10-Year Single Term for Electoral Commission Leadership

The Constitution Review Committee (CRC) has proposed a significant reform to strengthen Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) by introducing a fixed, non-renewable 10-year term for its leadership. This move aims to insulate the EC from political influence and enable its leaders to discharge their duties without fear or favor.

According to the CRC’s report, the proposed amendment to Article 223 of the 1992 Constitution would provide a single 10-year term for the EC Chairperson and Deputy Commissioners, or until they attain the age of 65, whichever comes first. This reform is expected to enhance the credibility of the Electoral Commission and boost public trust in Ghana’s electoral processes.

The CRC believes that this change will allow the EC leadership to focus on their constitutional responsibilities without worrying about reappointment. By reducing the influence of politics, the EC can ensure free and fair elections, which is crucial for Ghana’s democracy.

The proposal is part of the CRC’s broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s governance framework. Other reforms being considered include changes to the presidential term and the structure of the Council of State.

The CRC’s report has been presented to President John Dramani Mahama, and the government is expected to work on implementing these reforms in a bipartisan manner.
