Weija Gbawe STEM School Stalls At 70 Percent – Shaib

Weija Gbawe Member of Parliament Jerry Ahmed Shaib has disclosed in Accra that he is yet to receive a favourable response from the Education Minister despite several engagements over the stalled STEM school project in his constituency.
The project, initiated under the previous administration to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, is about 70 percent complete but has stalled following the change in government. Shaib said contractors have vacated site and equipment meant for laboratories remains uninstalled.
According to Jerry Ahmed Shaib, multiple letters and meetings with the Ministry of Education have not yielded a clear timeline for completion. He warned that continued delay risks cost overrun, vandalism and denial of access for students in Weija Gbawe who need STEM pathways to tertiary and technical careers.
In Ghana, STEM education is governed by the Education Strategic Plan 2018 to 2030 and implemented by Ghana Education Service under the Free SHS and TVET reform. STEM schools are designed with smart classrooms, robotics labs, and applied science workshops to feed into engineering programmes at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and technical universities. CSSPS placement now includes STEM senior high schools as a distinct category, while WASSCE grading for science electives determines university admission. Completion of abandoned school projects remains a recurring search term for parents tracking Free SHS infrastructure.
The Weija Gbawe constituency, part of Ga South Municipal, has seen rapid population growth and pressure on school infrastructure. Residents say the STEM school would reduce travel to Accra Academy and other far schools. Shaib has urged the Ministry to prioritize the project in the 2026 budget and release funds to allow the contractor to return to site before the next academic year.
