Ghana, China Forge New Trade Investment Deal

A Chinese business and academic delegation has opened talks with Ghana on establishing an industrial park and expanding trade and investment.

Ghana and China are set to deepen their long-standing economic partnership following high-level discussions between the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and a delegation of Chinese entrepreneurs and academics seeking to expand investment, trade and industrial cooperation. The seven-member delegation, led by Professor Haoxing Zhao, Dean of the China-Africa Economic and Trade Research Institute and founder of China-Africa Bridge, paid a courtesy call on the ministry in Accra on Monday, July 27, 2026 to explore new avenues for collaboration between the two countries.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral trade, attracting investment, expanding educational partnerships and creating new opportunities for industrial development. A major proposal presented during the meeting was the establishment of an industrial park in Ghana to serve as a hub for manufacturing, skills development, entrepreneurship and innovation. Professor Zhao said the initiative would foster stronger partnerships between Chinese enterprises, universities and Ghanaian institutions while supporting Ghana’s industrial transformation agenda. He explained that the delegation’s visit was intended to build stronger commercial ties and create practical platforms for cooperation that would generate mutual economic benefits for both countries.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Deputy Minister Hon. Sampson Ahi described the visit as another milestone in the enduring friendship between Ghana and China. He noted that the two nations have maintained strong diplomatic and economic relations for 66 years, stressing that the Government of Ghana remains committed to expanding bilateral cooperation through increased investment, trade and technology transfer. Hon. Ahi also welcomed China’s zero-tariff initiative, describing it as a significant opportunity for Ghanaian exporters to increase their presence in one of the world’s largest consumer markets. He said the policy would enhance market access for Ghanaian businesses and strengthen trade flows between the two countries.

Highlighting Ghana’s strategic role in continental trade, the Deputy Minister underscored the country’s position as host of the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), describing Ghana as an attractive destination for investors seeking access to Africa’s expanding single market. He assured the delegation that Ghana offers a stable and investor-friendly environment backed by government support and legal protection for businesses. “Your investment will be protected. We are ready for business and we will support you as a government,” Hon. Ahi said.

The visit also builds on broader Ghana-China economic engagement, including the successful Ghana Day event held in Hangzhou and the establishment of the Ghana-Hangzhou Economic and Trade Centre. The centre is expected to strengthen commercial links by promoting Ghanaian products, facilitating business partnerships and connecting local enterprises and innovative initiatives to opportunities within the Chinese market. The latest engagement signals renewed momentum in Ghana-China economic relations as both countries seek to expand investment, industrialization and trade cooperation for shared economic growth.
