The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has condemned comments made by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin against a Circuit Court judge handling the case involving Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC. Afenyo-Markin’s remarks were deemed unprofessional and unethical by the GBA.
The controversy surrounds Afenyo-Markin’s criticism of the judge’s decision to remand Abronye DC, with the Minority Leader stating he has “no respect” for the judge and would continue to “disrespect” him until he upholds the law. The GBA’s Public Relations Officer, Saviour Kudze, emphasized that while judges can be criticized, lawyers must use appropriate legal channels, such as appeals, rather than public statements that could be seen as insulting the bench.
Kudze stressed that the GBA will not condone conduct by lawyers that undermines judges or the integrity of the judiciary, citing past incidents where the association has taken a stand against similar behavior. Afenyo-Markin has defended his comments, arguing that it is both ethical and within his constitutional rights to call out a judge who has no respect for the law and citizens’ rights.
The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has accused the GBA of selective silence, suggesting the association is aligned with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The GBA has dismissed these allegations, maintaining it operates independently and professionally.
