Trump Downplays Taiwan Concerns Ahead of Xi Meeting

 

 

US President Donald Trump is set to discuss the contentious issue of US arms sales to Taiwan with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming visit to Beijing, amidst escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing. According to #Reuters, Trump expressed confidence that his personal rapport with Xi would prevent a conflict over Taiwan, stating, “I don’t think it’ll happen”.

 

The US has been Taiwan’s most important international backer, providing billions in military aid, a move vehemently opposed by China, which claims the island as its own territory. Trump announced an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan in December, the largest-ever US weapons sale to the island ¹.

 

During a press conference, Trump reiterated his willingness to discuss Taiwan with Xi, saying, “I’m going to have that discussion with President Xi. President Xi would like us not to, and I’ll have that discussion”. The US adheres to a “one-China policy”, acknowledging Beijing’s stance while maintaining informal support for Taiwan.

 

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has expressed confidence in the US-Taiwan relationship, stating they will “continue to enhance cooperation” and “build effective deterrence forces”. Senators have urged Trump to announce arms sales to Taiwan, emphasizing America’s unwavering support ².

 

As tensions simmer, Trump’s visit to China aims to stabilize relations strained by trade disputes and disagreements over Iran and nuclear arms. The outcome of the talks remains uncertain, with Taiwan’s status poised to be a key point of contention.
