Melania Trump Doc Banned in South Africa

In a surprising move, cinemas in South Africa have pulled the plug on screening the documentary about US First Lady Melania Trump, just days before its global release. The decision, announced by local distributor Filmfinity, cites “recent developments” as the reason, without elaborating further.

According to the New York Times, Filmfinity’s head of sales and marketing, Thobashan Govindarajulu, stated that the decision was made internally, with no external pressure from authorities or other parties. The move has sparked speculation about the motivations behind it, particularly given the strained relations between South Africa and the US.

The documentary, titled “Melania,” follows the First Lady’s life in the 20 days leading up to President Donald Trump’s second inauguration. It was directed by Brett Ratner, who has faced criticism for past sexual misconduct allegations. The film was set to premiere worldwide on Friday, but its release has now been halted in South Africa.

Mark Sardi, CEO of South Africa’s Ster-Kinekor movie chain, expressed surprise at the decision, saying the film had met all regulatory requirements. “Our basic position would be we’re not in the business of censorship,” he told the New York Times.

The US-South Africa relations have been tense, with the Trump administration imposing tariffs and spreading false claims about white genocide in South Africa. This has led to widespread outrage and diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

The cancellation of the documentary’s release is seen as a commercial decision, possibly influenced by the current political climate. As the situation unfolds, it’s unclear what impact this will have on future cultural exchanges between the two nations.
