Minister Warns Against Helping Foreigners Acquire Ghana Cards and Passports
The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, has warned against helping foreigners acquire Ghana Cards and passports. This warning comes amid concerns over the integrity of Ghana’s national identity system, with reports of foreigners fraudulently obtaining these documents.
Crackdown on Illegal Activities Underway
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has already taken steps to address the issue, with 20 people currently being prosecuted for their involvement in the fraudulent practice. Some of these individuals are Ghanaians who vouched for foreign nationals. The NIA has warned that it will take legal action against anyone found guilty.
Protecting Ghana’s National Security
The NIA emphasizes that acquiring a Ghana Card or passport through fraudulent means is a serious offense, punishable by law. The authority is working closely with security agencies to identify and prosecute those involved in such activities. The public is also being urged to report any suspicious activities related to Ghana Card registration.
Safeguarding the System
The Ghana Immigration Service has also repatriated three foreign nationals who obtained Ghana Cards through fraudulent means. The NIA is taking further steps to safeguard the integrity of the national identification system, including canceling the Ghana Cards associated with these individuals and suppressing their names from the National Identity Register.
