Dr Nana Yaw Adutwum, Head of Research for the United Party, has demanded that government authorities provide full disclosure regarding the custodial status of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe Attionu following her extradition to Ghana. The call intensifies public scrutiny over the handling of high-profile corruption convictions.
Dr Adutwum insisted that citizens deserve clarity on the location and condition of the former chief executive, who was recently transferred into state custody to begin a ten-year sentence. He argued that transparency in the execution of judicial orders is essential to preserving confidence in the rule of law and deterring perceptions of preferential treatment. The United Party official emphasized that the matter transcends partisanship and touches on the broader principle of accountability for stewardship of public resources.
Sedina Tamakloe Attionu was extradited from the United States earlier this month after a Nevada District Court certified Ghana’s request, marking the first such transfer between the two nations since two thousand and nine. The United States Embassy confirmed that she was convicted in absentia on more than seventy corruption-related counts, including embezzling over six million dollars equivalent in taxpayer funds during her tenure from twenty-thirteen to twenty-sixteen. She arrived at Kotoka International Airport aboard United Airlines flight UA nine nine six and was immediately received by security officials.
The Accra High Court sentenced her in twenty-twenty-four for multiple offences including stealing, conspiracy, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, and procurement breaches, with losses estimated at nearly ninety million cedis. She had been granted leave in twenty-twenty-one to seek medical treatment abroad but failed to return, prompting the court to continue proceedings without her presence. The Mahama administration subsequently initiated extradition procedures, culminating in her arrest by United States Marshals in Texas and detention at the Nevada Southern Detention Center.
Dr Adutwum noted that while the judiciary has pronounced judgment, the executive bears responsibility for ensuring that the sentence is enforced without opacity, according to #TV3GH. He rejected speculation about a potential presidential pardon and urged authorities to publish updates on routine medical examinations and administrative processing prior to her placement with the Ghana Prisons Service. The United Party researcher added that consistent enforcement demonstrates that no individual, irrespective of political affiliation, stands above legal sanction.
The extradition and impending incarceration represent a watershed moment in Ghana’s anti-graft architecture, signaling strengthened bilateral cooperation with Washington on financial crimes. Whether full disclosure on custodial logistics will follow remains the pivotal test of institutional transparency as the nation grapples with restoring public trust in governance.
