An Accra High Court has remanded five suspects into police custody for allegedly using artificial intelligence-generated deepfake contents to impersonate President John Dramani Mahama, his wife, and other high-profile personalities. The suspects are accused of using the fake videos and audios to defraud victims of approximately GH₵500,000.
According to the prosecution, the suspects created the deepfake contents to deceive unsuspecting individuals into believing that the President and other prominent figures were endorsing certain products or services. The police investigation revealed that the suspects had created a sophisticated scheme to exploit the credibility of these public figures.
The court heard that the suspects had used advanced technology to create convincing deepfakes, making it difficult for victims to distinguish between the real and fake content. The prosecution emphasized that the suspects’ actions were a serious threat to national security and the reputation of the individuals involved.
“The use of deepfake technology to impersonate public figures is a serious crime that undermines trust and confidence in our institutions,” said a police investigator. The investigator added that the police were working to identify other suspects involved in the scam.
The five suspects are currently in police custody, awaiting further investigation and trial. The case has sparked concerns about the misuse of AI technology and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such scams.
