Gospel Music Fraternity Mourns Loss of Maame Tiwaa

 

 

The Ghanaian gospel music community is currently observing the one-week memorial of the late legendary singer, Maame Tiwaa, a prominent member of the iconic Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo band. The solemn event is taking place at the Bantama Presby School Park in the Ashanti Region, with mourners expected to wear black attire as a mark of respect ยน.

 

Maame Tiwaa, who was 60 years old at the time of her passing, had been a key figure in Ghana’s gospel music scene for over three decades, known for her powerful vocals and soul-lifting performances. Her contributions to the Asomafo band’s hit songs, such as “Wo Haw Ne Sen” and “Awurade Ka Me Ho”, earned her widespread recognition and admiration.

 

The news of her death on December 7, 2025, sent shockwaves through the music industry, with many paying tribute to her legacy. Nana Poku Ashis, the manager of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, described her passing as a great loss, sharing a video of her performance on social media with the caption, “It is well hmmmmm!!”.

 

Maame Tiwaa had remained active in ministry and performance until her passing, including a notable appearance at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, where she accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of Yaw Sarpong. Her final days were spent caring for Yaw Sarpong during his health struggles, making her passing a significant loss to the gospel music community.

 

The one-week observance is expected to be attended by family members, friends, and industry colleagues, with details of her burial arrangements to be announced. The event is a testament to Maame Tiwaa’s enduring impact on Ghana’s gospel music landscape.
