Mahama Launches 24-Hour Economy Market Drive

President John Dramani Mahama has launched the construction of a modern 24-hour economy market in Bimbilla, Northern Region, as part of his “Resetting Ghana” tour. The project is a key component of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto, aiming to establish modern markets in all 261 districts to stimulate round-the-clock economic activity and strengthen local commerce.

The Bimbilla market will feature ten warehouses, clinics, fire and police posts, banking services, crèches, and food outlets, making it one of the largest model markets under the programme. The facility is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, stabilise prices, and improve incomes for farmers through expanded processing and distribution opportunities.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, President Mahama emphasised the importance of markets as key hubs for trade and circulation of money. He stressed that “farming without access to markets undermines the economic value of production,” highlighting the need to connect farms, markets, and households.

The market is expected to generate jobs and strengthen the agricultural value chain, with Bimbilla’s strong agricultural base in yam, maize, beans, and groundnut production. The District Assembly will oversee the maintenance and management of the facility through a dedicated market administration system.

President Mahama reiterated the NDC’s commitment to quality execution, ensuring the facility serves generations to come. He also clarified that tricycles and motorbikes being distributed under the Free Primary Health Care programme are for outreach, vaccination delivery, and community-based preventive healthcare, not ambulances.
